We all know that India decriminalized Article 377 in 2018. Menaka Guruswamy and Arundhati Katju are among the few lawyers who fought to legalise homosexuality in India.

 

Now the two lawyers are rooting to legalise same-sex marriage in India. Menaka Guruswamy said that they are in support of the Marriage Project – a legal project that aims to make same-sex marriages constitutionally right. She said, “whether gay or straight, Hindu or Muslim, upper caste or lower caste, male or female, all want the same thing—a lasting long-term relationship recognized by society and by the law.”

Arundhati Katju said that they were hoping for a future where the right to choose one’s partner will also include LGBTQ+ couples to marry. The two lawyers said that the groundwork of the ‘Marriage Project’ has already begun. Sonu and Nikesh – a gay couple form Kerala got married and have filed a petition to legalise their marriage. Guruswamy said that she believes that young people will now fight for LGBTQ rights and inclusiveness and will help the nation in legalizing in same-sex marriage.

When India abrogated Article 377, no one was happier than the two lawyers who fought the Supreme court to overrule the law. They both even made it to the 2019 TIME 100 Most Influential People list, and their landmark win has since been cited as precedent in the battle against anti-LGBT laws in Kenya. Guruswamy and Katju revealed that their victory was personal as well as professional. Katju in an interview spoke about how hard was it to find 5 petitioners who were ready to stand up for the LGBTQ+ community in abrogating Article 377.  And now Katju and Guruswamy have boldly come out as lesbian power couple who made the LGBTQ+ rights movements a success.

For the first time, they came out as a couple, telling him that they are in a relationship with each other while giving us all a new understanding of #couplegoals. Guruswamy and Katju like any other Queer people kept their relationship in shadow until they fought for their rights. In reality Guruswamy and Katju’s relationship is much better than the movies. They’ve extended their love to include the entire country, and all its queer inhabitants.
