Freedom Looks – men’s beauty salon is operated by the inmates of Kerala Central prison. The parlour was inaugurated on 16th December, 2019 by Director of General Prison – Rishiraj Singh and Transport Commissioner – Sreelekha. The initiative of the beauty parlour is a part of the rehabilitations programme by the Prison Department. It is not the first time Kerala prison had caught the eye of the public. Earlier, the prison started the initiative of food business and garment production.
Kerala Prison Inmates run beauty parlour
A deserted building which was unused near the jail is renovated and equipped with facilities of parlour. This is the second beauty parlour of the state run by prison inmates. Reportedly, the income of the parlour will go to the welfare fund of prisoners which in turn will help in establishing their online services . Talking to the media the Transport Commissioner said that the prisoners are very talented and constant training by the officers would help them seek a job when they get out. She said that apart from the initiatives running, they are hoping to open a women’s beauty parlour and petrol pump manned by the inmates in parts of the state.
A total of 22 inmates were trained in the beautician course. The inmates will work on a shift basis. Reportedly, the parlour has given priority to hair cuts, hair dyeing, spa, manicure and pedicure services, facial and other basic skills. The Director of General prison said that the public can avail all types of services at the parlour and a plan has been initiated to have separate area for senior citizens to avail the services.
