Space farming just got a little more interesting.

From Earth to Orbit

Aerospace startup SpaceX, led by Elon Musk, is preparing to deliver weed and coffee plant cultures to the International Space Station (ISS). The next mission, scheduled for March 2020, aims to explore how plants grow in microgravity conditions.

It’s not about recreational space gardening this is scientific experimentation.

The Science Behind the Plants

The experiment is a collaboration between:
  • Front Range Biosciences, an agricultural biotech company
  • Space Cell
  • University of Colorado
The goal is to study:
  • How zero gravity affects plant growth
  • Potential genetic mutations caused by microgravity or cosmic radiation
  • Possibilities for space-based crop modification

Once the weed and coffee plants return to Earth about a month after launch researchers will analyse any changes in growth, structure, or genetics.

“There are theories suggesting plants in space may mutate. This mission helps us observe what actually happens when they return to Earth,” said the CEO of Front Range Biosciences.

Why It Matters

This isn’t just a quirky experiment it could have major implications for space agriculture and biotech:

  • Future space missions: Understanding plant growth in space is key for long-term space travel and colonization.
  • Agricultural innovation: Observing mutations could help develop more resilient or high yield crops on Earth.
  • Scientific curiosity: Weed and coffee might be just the start of what humans can grow beyond our planet.

From Microgravity to Your Mug

Imagine sipping a cup of coffee someday, knowing the seeds may have once floated in orbit. While it’s still early days, these experiments are pushing the boundaries of biology, agriculture, and space science one plant at a time.
