Kamalathaal Paati Serves Idlis for Just Rupee one Amid Economic Crisis
In Coimbatore, Kamalathaal Paati is not just famous for her soft, steaming idlis she’s celebrated for her heart. At 82, she still serves hundreds of people every morning, charging just Re. 1 per idli, refusing to raise prices even during an economic crisis. Her generosity has made her a local legend, feeding daily wage workers, students, and anyone who can’t afford more than ₹5 for breakfast, proving that kindness can thrive even in tough times.
A Tradition of Care and Craft
Kamalathaal has been cooking for over 30 years, starting with idlis priced at 50 paise each. She only increased it to Re. 1 fifteen years ago and has never raised it since. Alongside her granddaughter-in-law Aarthi, she wakes up at 5 a.m. daily to prepare the batter using a traditional grinding stone and starts steaming idlis at 6 a.m.
By 7 a.m., the queue starts forming, and by the end of the day, she sells 600–800 idlis, serving anyone in need.
Cooking with Tradition, Updated with Support
Initially, Kamalathaal used firewood to steam her idlis. After her story went viral in local newspapers, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) gifted her a gas stove with a free LPG connection, making her work easier while maintaining her traditional touch.
Despite this support, she remains committed to her Re. 1 idlis, ensuring affordability for those who rely on her generosity.
Why Kamalathaal Paati Inspires Us
In a world where prices rise daily, Kamalathaal’s gesture is a reminder that humanity costs nothing. Her dedication, skill, and compassion feed not only bodies but also hope, proving that small acts of kindness can make a massive impact on communities.
“In a society where everything works on money, Kamalathaal Paati shows us that food and care can still be acts of love.”
